Darkening of the skin, medical term Hyperpigmentation is commonly caused by high melanin level. Melanin components gives color to your skin, hair and eyes. Melanin level can be easily affected by aging, trauma, pregnancy, diseases and excessive exposure to sunlight, easily causing unsightly brown spots.
Melanin disorder can be either internal or external. Internal causes are inborn and they are especially common for people with dark skin tone.
External causes include exposure to chemicals, estrogen, betaxolol, minocycline and sunlight.
Ultraviolet rays cause strains, freckles and spots which can cause permanent or temporary discoloration. They are common on skin areas that are exposed to sun.
Surgeries, traumas and stress also cause hyperpigmentation, but the spots remain even when the condition improves.
